A yoga retreat is so much more than a vacation or a holiday

If you’ve never been on a yoga retreat before, you might think that it’s simply a vacation in a pretty place with some yogic practices thrown in…and while that’s certainly part of a yoga retreat, the retreat itself offers a unique experience that goes way beyond a typical vacation.

Here’s why a yoga retreat is better than a holiday…and why you should do at least ONE in your lifetime:

  1. Mindfulness and Meditation: Yoga retreats include daily meditation and mindfulness practices, giving you the opportunity to turn inward, reconnect and gain greater perspective.

  2. Holistic Wellness: A yoga retreat focuses on overall well-being, combining physical asana practice with nourishing plant-based foods to support you from the inside out, integrating breathing and meditation while also weaving yoga philosophy, physiology and mythology too!

  3. Detox and Reset: A retreat provides a structured environment to detox from daily stressors and habits. Being on a yoga retreat can help to reset your routine while building new habits and giving your yoga practice fresh insight.

  4. Community and Connection: You'll meet like-minded individuals who share your interest in yoga, travel and wellness, this not only creates a supportive community, but often times these connections can lead to long lasting friendships.

  5. Immersive Experience: Unlike a regular yoga class, a retreat offers an immersive experience where you can deepen your practice and understanding of yoga amongst the serenity of a beautiful, purpose built setting, usually being outdoors amongst nature - this provides an entirely different experience to being a yoga studio!

  6. Much needed ME TIME: A yoga retreat is designed just for YOU, giving you plenty of solo down time without having to worry about your day to day responsibilities…everything has been organised and is taken care of!

  7. Cultural Immersion: Travelling to a yoga retreat in a foreign country allows for a rich cultural experience where participants explore local markets, temples and villages as well as a more hands-on experience such as a cooking class, getting to experience the local cuisine.

  8. Go beyond your comfort zone: The focused environment of a retreat provides new opportunities and experiences that allow for personal reflection and growth beyond your yoga mat and outside of your everyday life.

I love getting to go on a yoga retreat…I have found that the intentional practices laid out in a yoga retreat have provided greater insight and awareness to the moments spent having new experiences with people and places to create long lasting memories and friendships.

What was your experience like on a yoga retreat? Or are you yet to do one?
